Hi there Girls Inc. of Halton supporters!

Today we are highlighting one of our amazing community supports, Incia Palmieri of Once Upon a Mat! Incia has so generously allowed us to run our Action 4 Safety program in her yoga studio, and has led the girls in a Love and Kindness meditation. Incia agreed to answer a few questions for us so that the Girls Inc. community could get to know her better.

Incia Palmieri founded Once Upon a Mat in 2014 as a service for kids across different communities and for teachers to incorporate yoga and mindfulness in schools. This past October, Once Upon A Mat opened its physical space as a kids and family yoga studio in Oakville.

“Our Mission is connecting the mind and body through storytelling to empower kids, families and communities. Our Vision is to enable all kids, families and educators to embrace yoga in their everyday lives” says Incia. “Our Values are Keeping Kids at the Heart, Fostering Creativity, Inclusiveness, Embracing Community and Shifting Mindsets.”

This past winter, Incia reached out to the Girls Inc. team via Instagram to suggest connecting. Incia explains that she reached out because she “wanted to establish a relationship with Girls Inc. to not only provide a space for programming but to work with a like-minded organizations to impact our communities.”

She further explains “organizations like Girls Inc. foster and nurture girls with educational tools to empower them to make positive changes not only for themselves but for those in their communities. This is how change happens and this is how our future generations benefit as well.”

Once Upon A Mat is making positive waves in the Oakville community, and will be continuing with the great work they are already doing. Incia elaborates “Once Upon a Mat is a nurturing yoga studio for kids and families. We provide yoga classes for babies, toddlers, kids and tweens. We offer camps, birthday parties and school programs. We also offer workshops on nutrition, healthy living, teen retreats and we will be opening a Mindfulness-based curriculum for a Preschool in Fall 2018.”

We’re excited for our relationship with Once Upon A Mat to continue to grow! If you want to learn more about Once Upon A Mat visit https://onceuponamat.ca/ or follow along on social media @OnceUponaMat!
